Over 20 Years of Wildlife Photography

Specialty in the upper Midwest

Steve is a self-taught wildlife photographer that lives in the north woods of Cloquet, Minnesota. He believes the quality of his wildlife photography comes from his strong commitment to patience, understanding his subjects, respect for them and plenty of luck – but “you create luck by actually getting yourself out in the field or to the woods.”

In order to cause minimal disturbance or interference to the animal and its habitat, he tries to learn as much about his subjects and their habitat before heading afield with his camera.

As a state park naturalist and wildlife photographer, Steve truly enjoys sharing his appreciation and understanding of nature with others. He relishes the sight of someone discovering a natural treasure for the first time – “that spark in their eyes” makes his commitment to nature and wildlife photography completely worthy of his efforts.

“I think we can learn from nature if we slow down long enough and look closely enough to see the little things in life we so often pass by,” Steve often says.

His favorite time of year to shoot wildlife photos is in the spring, when the birds are in their mating plumage, and in the fall when the animals are more active.

Totally self taught, Steve stays faithful to quality Canon SLR equipment and shoots Fuji ASA 100 film. He is adamant about never using digital enhancement to change the appearance of his photos. “What you see in my pictures is EXACTLY what I saw through the lens when I took the picture. I am very particular about artistic honesty.”
